What is DSL?
What DSL is and how it can provide you with high speed Internet access for your home business.

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL is actually a high speed digital service that shares your telephone line to give you broadband Internet service without having to run extra wires to your home.

What's So Great About Broadband?
Most people connect to the Internet using a 56K dial-up service over their telephone line.  A modem takes the place of a telephone so you can send and receive data on your computer. Unfortunately, when the modem is using the line, you can't use your telephone and vice versa. If you want to use both at the same time, you'll need an extra phone line.

Broadband services, which include DSL and Cable Internet, do not displace your residential phone service. Cable has its own wiring and DSL shares your phone line by using frequencies above the voice range.

The other great advantages of broadband Internet are that they are always on and run much faster than dial-up Internet. You simply turn on your PC and you are on the Internet. No need to dial any numbers and wait for a modem to connect.  Speed? How about up to 30 to 50 times as fast as a really good dial-up modem? Web pages load faster, software downloads in minutes, not hours. Plus, you can do things like listen to FM quality streaming audio from Internet radio stations or watch video presentations. Forget that on dial-up connections.

What Does Broadband Cost
Cost depends a lot on where you are located and how many providers are offering service in your area. Rates of $35 to $45 a month are not uncommon. That's more expensive than dial-up, but remember that you don't need a second phone line and you can set up a home network to run several computers at the same time on broadband with a single account. If you use a computer more than a few hours a day or have more than one Internet account in your family, broadband might actually wind up costing less than dial-up.
